May 23, 2013

May 23, 2013: Asian Television Network International Limited (ATN) (TSX-SAT), Canada’s largest South Asian Broadcaster, is pleased to announce that it has acquired the Exclusive broadcast rights for ‘The Legend of Ponnivala’ for Canada from The Sophia Hilton Foundation of Canada and Soft Science Associates, Ltd.

‘The Legend of Ponnivala’ is a 26 part animated series produced in Canada and tells a story of the epic Indian heroes Ponnar and Shankar. It also relates the origins of their family, back to the founding of the region two generations earlier. It is a surprisingly expansive tale for a local legend, and includes a wealth of historical and social insights into medieval Indian culture. It draws inspiration and characters from the great Indian epic, the Mahabharata, while keeping its focus on farming, the lifestyle central to its place of origin.

“This is amongst the first of its kind Canadian Animated production based on a story from The Indian Subcontinent. We have always supported, promoted and carried innovative independent Canadian productions on our channels and plan to continue doing so with even more vigour and resources” said Dr. Shan Chandrasekar President and CEO of ATN.

The series will air on 3 ATN channels namely; the flagship channel ATN HD, ATN Jaya TV & CBN in English and the same will also be dubbed in Tamil language for ATN’s Tamil language channel ATN Jaya TV at a later date. ATN hopes to gain audiences across all age groups and communities from this show as the story has never been presented in a televised format before.
